INDUSTRY INSIGHT: JANUARY 2025 - A Comprehensive Checklist: Navigating the UK’s Latest EV Charging Legislation

As the UK accelerates its transition to electric vehicles (EVs), recent updates to EV charging legislation are paving the way for a more reliable, accessible, and user-friendly charging experience. In this blog, we’ll explore how these new regulations affect EV charging and how businesses like SEE-V are leading the way in creating a more efficient and transparent EV ecosystem.

The UK’s latest legislation, particularly the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023, aims to enhance the reliability, accessibility, and transparency of electric vehicle (EV) charging. These measures support the UK’s ambitious goal of phasing out new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, ensuring a smoother transition to electric vehicles while encouraging innovation in the private sector.

Use the 5-part checklist below to audit your current infrastructure and make the necessary updates to ensure compliance with the latest EV charging regulations. If you need guidance or support in achieving compliance, contact SEE-V to learn more about how we can help you stay compliant and improve your EV charging experience.

Q1: How is the government ensuring improved charging reliability?Starting in November 2024, all public rapid and ultra-rapid chargers (50kW+) must achieve a 99% reliability standard. By 2026, operators will need to publish annual reliability data, offering greater transparency and accountability. At SEE-V, our network of 50kW+ chargers already meets these reliability standards, and we utilize an innovative charger management platform to monitor and report on all chargers in real time.

Checklist:

☐ Do your public rapid and ultra-rapid chargers (50kW+) meet the 99% reliability standard?

☐ Are you prepared to publish annual reliability data starting in 2026?

Q2: What changes are being made to payment options for EV charging?By November 2024, all public charge points over 8kW must offer contactless payment options, allowing drivers to pay as simply as they would for petrol, without needing specific apps or accounts. At SEE-V, we offer flexible solutions and ensure our clients purchase future-proof, compliant technology. Our Rolec chargers, for example, feature contactless payment solutions.

Checklist

☐ Have you upgraded all public charge points over 8kW to accept contactless payments?

☐ Have you eliminated the need for drivers to use specific apps or accounts for payment?

Q3: How is pricing transparency being addressed? To avoid hidden costs, charging providers must display pricing in pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh). This regulation has been in effect since late 2023. At SEE-V, we believe in clear pricing and display it prominently on our on-device screens. This information is also available through the SEE-V charging app, ensuring drivers can easily compare costs.

Checklist

☐ Are your charging costs displayed clearly in pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh) on all charge points?

☐ Is this pricing information easily accessible to users online or via an app?

Q4: What support is available for drivers using public charging points?By November 2024, all public charging points must offer a toll-free, 24/7 helpline for customer support. This will help with troubleshooting and emergencies. SEE-V provides multi-lingual driver support through our 24/7 helpline at 0800 058 4291, and support is also available via the SEE-V charging app.

Checklist

☐ Have you implemented a toll-free, 24/7 helpline for driver support?☐ Does your support system include multilingual assistance for diverse user needs?

Q5: What is being done to improve data access and roaming for EV drivers? The government is introducing Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) standards to make real-time data on charge point availability, location, and pricing more accessible. By 2025, operators must integrate with at least one third-party roaming platform to allow drivers to use multiple networks seamlessly. At SEE-V, our preferred hardware solutions are OCPI compliant, and we work with Octopus Electroverse and GreenFlux for seamless roaming integration.

Checklist

☐ Are your charge points compatible with Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) standards?

☐ Have you integrated your charging network with at least one third-party roaming platform to support multi-network use?
